Add 7.5% tax to $100
Tax: $100 × 0.075 = $7.50
Total: $100 + $7.50 = $107.50
Add sales tax to a price, or enter a tax-inclusive total to find the pre-tax price and tax amount.
Example: Add 7.5% sales tax to a $100 purchase
To add tax, convert the tax rate into a decimal and multiply it by the pre-tax price. Add that tax amount to the original price to find the total.
To work backward from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total paid by one plus the tax rate written as a decimal. Subtract the resulting pre-tax amount from the total to find the tax included.
Tax: $100 × 0.075 = $7.50
Total: $100 + $7.50 = $107.50
Tax: $49.99 × 0.0825 = $4.12, rounded to the nearest cent
Total: $49.99 + $4.12 = $54.11
Pre-tax price: $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100
Tax included: $107 − $100 = $7
Multiply the pre-tax price by the sales tax rate as a decimal. Then add the tax amount to the pre-tax price for the final total.
Divide the total price by one plus the tax rate expressed as a decimal. For a 7% rate, divide the total by 1.07.
The tax is $7.50. The final price is $107.50.
In most ordinary retail calculations, the discount reduces the taxable price first, and sales tax is then calculated on the discounted amount.
