How to convert a ratio to a percent

Treat the first number as the part and the second number as the whole. Divide the part by the whole, then multiply the result by 100.

Ratio to percent formula
Percentage = (part ÷ whole) × 100

For a ratio of 3:5, divide 3 by 5 to get 0.6. Multiply 0.6 by 100, which gives 60%.

Important: This converter reads a ratio as part : whole. If you need the percentage share of both parts in a two-part ratio, add the parts together first and use that total as the whole.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a ratio to a percent?

Divide the first number by the second number and multiply by 100. For example, 2:5 becomes 2 ÷ 5 = 0.4, and 0.4 × 100 = 40%.

What is 3:4 as a percentage?

Divide 3 by 4 to get 0.75. Multiply by 100, so 3:4 equals 75%.

How do I convert both parts of a ratio into percentages?

Add both parts to find the total, then divide each part by that total. For a 2:3 ratio, the total is 5; 2/5 is 40% and 3/5 is 60%.

Can a ratio be more than 100%?

Yes. When the first value is larger than the second value, the result exceeds 100%. For example, 6:5 equals 120%.

Can the second ratio value be zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined, so the whole or second ratio value must be a nonzero number.
