Find the price before a discount

Example: Find the original price when $75 is 25% off

How to find the original price

Convert the discount percentage into the portion of the original price that remains. Then divide the sale price by that remaining portion.

Original price formula
Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount percentage ÷ 100)

For example, after a 25% discount, the sale price is 75% of the original price. Divide the sale price by 0.75 to work backward to the original amount.

Important: A 100% discount does not have a calculable original price from the sale price because the sale price would be zero.

Examples

$75 after 25% off

A sale price is $75 after a 25% discount.

Calculation: $75 ÷ (1 − 25 ÷ 100) = $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100

Answer: The original price was $100, and the savings were $25.

$48 after 20% off

An item costs $48 after a 20% discount.

Calculation: $48 ÷ (1 − 20 ÷ 100) = $48 ÷ 0.80 = $60

Answer: The original price was $60, and the savings were $12.

$127.50 after 15% off

An item is marked down to $127.50 after a 15% discount.

Calculation: $127.50 ÷ (1 − 15 ÷ 100) = $127.50 ÷ 0.85 = $150

Answer: The original price was $150, and the savings were $22.50.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the original price after a discount?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount percentage written as a decimal. For a 25% discount, divide by 0.75.

What was the original price if the sale price is $75 after 25% off?

A 25% discount leaves 75% of the original price. Divide $75 by 0.75, which gives an original price of $100.

Why can’t I add the discount back to the sale price?

The discount is a percentage of the original price, not the sale price. Adding 25% to a $75 sale price gives $93.75, not $100.

Can I calculate an original price from a 100% discount?

No. A 100% discount reduces any original price to zero, so a zero sale price does not identify one unique original price.
